The Institute

Associate Director:

The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering (OCICE) was established in 1984 by the Department of Civil Engineering at Carleton University and the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa, both located in the city of Ottawa, to combine the research strengths of the two departments and to give students access to the professors, courses and facilities at both universities. Students register at the university with which their supervisor is affiliated but have free access to the classes and facilities at both universities.

The Institute offers programs leading to Master's degree with or without thesis and to Ph.D. in the following research areas:

Students accepted to the Institute register at the university to which the research supervisor is affiliated. Courses can be taken at both universities.

Institute's size and diversity of fields of study

The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering is one of the largest civil engineering graduate programs in Canada. The Institute's regular faculty and adjunct members, and the combined resources and facilities of the two departments enable it to offer programs of study and research in all the traditional fields of civil engineering. The exposure to a wide range of courses and specialization, and access to a large number of professors assists the students in selecting an area of research that is of interest to them. For students who have decided on their field and area of specialization, a good number of diverse course offerings exist within the Institute. Graduate students are able to select from courses offered at Carleton University or the University of Ottawa at no additional cost. The combined physical resources give graduate students greater and more expeditious access to a wider selection of library materials and computer and laboratory equipment.

Bilingualism

Although the primary language of the Institute is English, some courses in the Institute's programs may be offered in French at the University of Ottawa, which is a bilingual university. Academic requirements, such as seminars, theses or examinations may be met either in French or in English

Environmental Engineering Program

Students can also pursue graduate studies in the field of environmental engineering within the programs offered by the institute. In addition, specialized graduate programs in the area are available through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Environmental Engineering (OCIENE).
